WHAT IS W.E.I.G.H. TO GO?
Crossworks through a grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation is offering FREE health screenings and a series of educational classes dealing with reduction and self-management of heart disease risk among African Americans in Nash, Edgecombe, and Halifax counties. High blood pressure affects mostly blacks (40% more than whites) and African Americans are 29% more likely to die from heart disease than whites. The classes will help participants gain a better understanding of the role that such factors as nutrition, obesity, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and high blood cholesterol play in the causing heart attacks and strokes and how to make personal lifestyle changes to help prevent them. Participants will receive printed material from the American Heart Association. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?Anyone 18 years of age or older living in Edgecombe, Nash, and Halifax counties.WILL THE PROGRAM COST ME ANYTHING?There is no actual fee for participating in the program screenings or classes. We will however, request a one-time donation per participant to help cover some of the program costs.
