Debra received her undergraduate degree from Drexel University in 1975 and her master's degree from East Carolina University in 1995, both in nutrition science. She also became credentialed as a registered dietitian in 1992. She is an ordained minister and missionary.
Over the past 30 years she has accumulated a vast array of training and experience in the field of foods and nutrition. She is a noteworthy health and women's conference speaker on the topic of nutrition, with her expertise lying in diabetes, heart disease, obesity and the glaring health disparities that exist between African Americans and people of other ethnic origins. She provides consulting services to various agencies ranging from family care homes and rest homes, to county jails and has taught numerous college courses in nutrition and food service management. She presently serves as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Debra is the founder and executive director of Crossworks, which was established in 1999. Crossworks teaches principles of good nutrition and health in a biblical context, so that people can be built up physically as well as spiritually, emotionally, and financially. It also addresses hunger cycle by helping people without a job or means of supporting themselves to acquire basic skills in the food service industry, enabling them to move towards economic independence.
She is the mother of three grown children: Danielle, Dana, and David, all of whom live in Atlanta.
