JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Program Coordinator – Breast Cancer
Awareness Project
PURPOSE: It is the purpose of the Program
Coordinator for “Breaking Free –
Breast Cancer Awareness for Black Beauties” to plan
and conduct outreach seminars and activities to increase breast cancer
awareness and risk reduction among African American women through early
detection and screening methods such as self-breast exams, clinical exams and
mammogram screenings in Nash and Edgecombe counties.
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To establish and facilitate meetings of the Breast
Cancer advisory council. Work closely
with supporting agencies in the project area including Edgecombe and Nash
counties.
To publicize the
Breaking Free Project locally and abroad.
To conduct workshops targeting African American
women within the target area.
To enlist and train lay leaders to go out into their
communities and conduct breast cancer education presentations to groups of
women.
To enlist six African American beauty salon
consultants who will be trained to disseminate breast cancer literature to
their clients and refer women to get mammograms.
To coordinate and/or participate in community
outreach activities such as health fairs.
Display breast cancer literature and visuals at wide-scale community
events and gatherings.
To maintain data on all activities and outreach
programs for tracking and evaluation purposes.
To monitor financial project expenditures and prepare monthly reports.
Attend meetings and conferences as necessary with
the Susan B. Komen for the Cure NC Triangle Affiliate office and the Carolina
Community Network. Keep abreast of statewide and cancer related
activities. To perform other duties as
assigned.
Will report to the Executive Director of
Crossworks.
Experience and Skills:

Highly motivated with ability to work independently and a part of an
interdisciplinary team.

Excellent verbal and written communication, problem-solving, and
organizational skills
·
Experience promoting services and/or health behavior messages offered
by human service or public service agencies
·
Experience in creating partnerships and building coalitions
·
Experience in project management, volunteer development, grants
administration, women’s health and working with disadvantaged populations a
plus
·
Personal commitment to women’s health issue
·
Comfortable working with female population 25 and older
·
Budget and financial management skills
Computer skills in Microsoft Office required and
Excel (a plus)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in a science, health, social science, education, health
education, nursing, dietetics or related field or a bachelor’s with one year
of experience in health field, social work, community work or education desired.
